There are an increasing number of litigants in person so it is vital, not only to help individuals with no legal training or experience, but also to try and ensure that the English Justice system does not grind to a halt.

Litigants in person need to be aware that a Judge will almost certainly be empathetic to the difficulties of presenting at court without experience and potentially against a skilled and experienced advocate, but it is important also to be aware that the trend is towards ensuring stricter compliance with the Court rules (CPR) so it is a big  mistake to think that a Judge is able to or will bend the rules, notwithstanding that there is an Overriding Objective to promote fairness which is contained in the CPR.
